River Cruising

See More of the Destination, Without Constantly Packing and Unpacking

River cruising offers a different way to experience a destination. Smaller ships travel through the heart of a region, connecting historic cities, small towns, wine regions and countryside while your hotel travels with you.

In Europe, that might mean sailing past castles and vineyards on the Rhine, exploring Vienna and Budapest along the Danube, or experiencing the food, wine and landscapes of southern France along the Rhône. Farther afield, river journeys can take you into places such as the Amazon or Mekong.

What I especially like about river cruising is the balance. You have the ease of a cruise, but the focus remains firmly on the places you’re visiting.

Local guides, time to explore independently, and experiences that support the communities you visit can make meaningful travel part of your river cruise.

Why Consider a River Cruise

River cruising works particularly well for travelers who want to experience several destinations without spending a significant part of their trip navigating trains, airports and hotel changes.

Ships are considerably smaller than most ocean cruise ships, and many itineraries dock close to the places you’ve come to see. Excursions are generally included, although the number and style of choices vary by cruise line.

There’s also time simply to enjoy the journey. On scenic stretches of the Rhine, Danube, Douro or Rhône, the view from the ship becomes part of the experience rather than just transportation between destinations.

River cruising can be especially appealing if you:

  • Want to see several destinations without repeatedly changing hotels
  • Enjoy history, culture, food and wine
  • Prefer smaller ships and a more relaxed onboard atmosphere
  • Appreciate having many logistics handled for you
  • Want guided experiences while still having opportunities to explore independently

Finding the Right River Cruise

This is where the options can become surprisingly complicated.

Many river cruise companies sail the same rivers and visit many of the same ports. At first glance, their itineraries can look almost identical. The actual experience can be quite different.

Cruise lines vary in their approach to excursions, dining, beverages, gratuities, cabin design, activity levels and what’s included in the fare. Some provide several excursion choices each day, including cycling or hiking. Others emphasize food and wine, cultural experiences, luxury inclusions or a more traditional style of touring.

Even two cruises on the same river can spend different amounts of time in port or visit different towns along the way.

Finding the right fit also means planning around your accessibility needs, from moving around the ship and boarding arrangements to walking distances, cobblestones, and steps on excursions.

That’s why I don’t start by recommending a particular cruise line. I start by understanding how you like to travel and then compare the options that best fit you.

How to Choose the Right River Cruise

Firsthand Experience Matters

I’ve sailed several of Europe’s major rivers, including the Rhine, Danube and Rhône, and experienced different river cruise lines firsthand. I also regularly tour ships, meet with cruise-line representatives and continue my professional education so I can understand how the products differ beyond what appears in a brochure.

That perspective matters because there isn’t one river cruise line that’s right for everyone.

One traveler may value included active excursions and plenty of independence ashore. Another may prefer a more inclusive luxury experience. Someone else may care most about food and wine, cabin design, or spending additional time in particular destinations.

My role is to help you sort through those differences and find the combination of river, itinerary, cruise line and ship that makes sense for the experience you want.

Where Can You River Cruise?

Rhine

Castles, vineyards and historic towns make the Rhine one of the classic introductions to European river cruising. It’s especially appealing for travelers interested in scenery, wine and smaller communities alongside cities such as Amsterdam, Cologne or Basel.

Danube

The Danube combines some of Central Europe’s great cities with smaller towns and countryside. Vienna and Budapest are highlights of many itineraries, with routes extending through Austria and Germany and, on longer journeys, farther into Eastern Europe.

Rhône & Saône

For food, wine and France, this is one of my favorites. Cruises typically connect Lyon with Provence, with opportunities to experience wine regions, markets, Roman history and places such as Avignon and Arles.

Seine

Beginning or ending in Paris, Seine itineraries travel through Normandy and can combine art, history, countryside and the Normandy coast.

Douro

Portugal’s Douro is particularly appealing for its scenery and wine culture. The experience is less about moving between major European cities and more about the landscapes, vineyards and communities of the Douro Valley.

And those are only a few possibilities. River cruising extends beyond Europe’s best-known waterways to destinations including the Mekong, Nile and Amazon.
